Using movies and the news to help children learn more

Schoolchildren could expand their education through watching movies and the news, says a former education minister.

PETALING JAYA: Former education minister Maszlee Malik has urged teachers, students and parents to adopt new learning approaches to keep up with the new normal.

Speaking at an online forum hosted by Amanah Youth on The Threat of a “Lost Generation”, Maszlee said schoolchildren could expand their education beyond textbooks and the school syllabus by watching movies and the news.

“Our syllabus still follows the ‘old normal’, where students are required to sit in front of the laptop as if they are sitting in front of the teacher in class. It’s been a year (since the pandemic), there should be changes,” he said today.

Maszlee added that teachers must be given opportunities to conduct more “creative and progressive” classes that allowed for students to enhance their critical thinking skills, instead of strictly following the set syllabus.

“We need a more radical approach, a new pedagogy, syllabus and curriculum. It is not too late for us to implement this,” he said.

As an example, he said students could be asked to list down unfamiliar words from watching movies and discuss them in their online classes, or they could be asked to tune in to broadcast news channels so they could be more well-informed on current affairs.

“Parents must also remember that real education begins at home. They should not let teachers carry all the responsibility for their children.” he said.

For those who were less fortunate and unable to keep up with their studies online, Maszlee called on the public to inform his platform Untuk Malaysia on such students, so they could mobilise their volunteers to help out. - FMT
