‘Worst yet to come’ says health DG as Covid-19 deaths pile up

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah says it is also challenging for frontliners who have to bury those who died from the virus.

PETALING JAYA: Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has warned that the “worst is yet to come” as the Covid-19 situation worsens in the country.

In a comment on his Facebook post, Noor Hisham said between January and September last year, the country recorded less than 100 deaths.

“This year, in only nine days, we already have 71 deaths. I fear the worst is yet to come.”

Noor Hisham said it was also challenging for frontliners who have to bury those who died from the virus.

“They have to wear full protective gear under the sweltering heat until the burial is complete.

“I hope we all understand the challenges faced by each frontliner. Let us help the nation, look after one another, look after our families,” he added.

The surge in recent months has taken the total number of Covid-19 infections in the country to 133,559. As of noon Jan 9, a total of 542 people were reported to have died. - FMT
