KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s motion to annul the emergency ordinances has been postponed to the next Dewan Rakyat meeting.
The lower house was expected to debate and pass the resolution today, the last sitting of the first meeting of the fourth session.
According to the order paper, Ismail will table the motion to annul the Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 2021, the Emergency (Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021 and the Emergency (Employees Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodation and Amenities (Amendment) 2021.
Today, law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar requested that the motion be delayed to the next Dewan Rakyat meeting, slated to go on from Oct 25 to Dec 16, along with several other motions.
Speaker Azhar Harun approved Wan Junaidi’s request.
The ordinances are laws made by decree on the authority of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong without reference to Parliament, which would normally debate and approve laws before they are submitted for royal assent.
Under the Constitution, emergency ordinances cease to be in effect six months after the state of emergency expires. - FMT
