PAS wings to hold elections this weekend

Three PAS wings will hold elections and assemblies in separate locations this weekend amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

PAS Youth delegates will meet at Corus Paradise Resort in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan from Oct 30 to 31. Current youth chief Khairil Nizam Khirudin (above) is not expected to defend his post.

The party's women’s wing, Dewan Muslimat, will meet on the same dates at the party’s national headquarters along Jalan Raja Laut in Kuala Lumpur.

Meanwhile, delegates of the Islamist party’s religious council Dewan Ulamak will congregate at Kompleks Tahfiz Darul Ulum in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan for one day tomorrow.

Proceedings will be held in a “hybrid” format where only a limited number of delegates are allowed to attend on-location events while the rest will tune in online.

All three wings are expected to elect national-level office bearers for the 2021-2023 term.

State and branch-level elections have already been held.

A muktamar to watch

This is ahead of the 67th PAS general assembly, or muktamar, next weekend from Nov 6 to 7.

This year’s muktamar is expected to be the party’s last before it contests in the 15th general election.

Aside from electing officer bearers, top on the agenda will be deciding how to address the Umno-Bersatu fallout and choosing which side to work with.

Thus far, party leaders have appeared split on the issue - with some favouring its Muafakat Nasional pact with Umno and others preferring to maintain close ties with Bersatu in the Perikatan Nasional coalition.

With muktamar dates coinciding with the start of the Malacca state election campaign period, there is more urgency for PAS to communicate its direction to its members.

Closely watched will also be how the ruling party addresses issues like the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, alcohol sales, and lottery special draws. - Mkini
