Pandelela reveals ex-coach who liked 'lewd jokes' ended in rape case

Two-time Olympic medallist Pandelela Rinong has revealed that one of her former coaches who used to make "lewd jokes" ended up being involved in a rape case seven years later.

This came amid a recent outrage on social media over rape jokes allegedly made on a local talk show by actors.

“I used to have a coach who liked to make lewd jokes. I kept quiet or I might muster a fake laugh (when the jokes were made) because I was scared of him.

“There was one time I couldn’t stand it anymore and I chastised him, but I got bullied after that.

“Seven years later, he committed rape,” Pandelela (above) tweeted this morning.

The national diver said the man would cause trouble every year throughout the seven years but the athletes were unable to do anything about it.

This was as the man had backing from their head coach, she claimed.

However, Pandelela considered the athletes “very lucky” as they had been protected by their sports association.

“Moral of the story, we need a good leader who can right what’s wrong, instead of turning a blind eye to evil.

“And those abused must speak up, please! Small voices still matter if we are united,” she urged.

Safety first

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin also joined in the conversation by thanking Pandelela for speaking out.

The former youth and sports minister said he does not regret making the decision to “shake up Malaysian diving in light of these allegations” a few years ago.

“I would make the same decision every single time,” he tweeted.

Khairy added that the athletes’ safety from physical and mental abuse should take priority over winning medals “all day, every day”.

Pandelela’s revelation came after public outrage over actor Mohd Fauzi Mohd Nawawi comments on filming a rape scene involving co-star Raja Farah Raja in a talk show clip that has gone viral.

This incident has since reignited the discourse on social media about society’s approach towards rape jokes.

Pandelela had previously voiced her support for secondary school student Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam who had exposed one of her teachers for purportedly making rape jokes during class. - Mkini
