RM127mil to repair lifts at 67 PPR flats in KL

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the main complaint from residents during his visit to the Seri Perak PPR flats in Sentul was about faulty lifts.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has allocated RM127 million to repair and replace lifts in old People’s Housing Project (PPR) flats here.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said normal repair works to lifts would be completed by the end of this year.

“Replacing old lifts at all 67 PPR in Kuala Lumpur will take one or two years,” he told reporters after visiting the Seri Perak PPR flats in Sentul today.

The seven blocks of 17-storey flats were built in 1986 and house 7,140 residents.

Ismail said non-functioning lifts have been a major problem for residents, especially during emergencies such as when there is a water supply disruption or a death among the residents.

He said it was especially hard for residents on the higher floors to bring down the body of a dead person.

Asked about the lack of parking spots at PPRs, Ismail said Kuala Lumpur  City Hall (DBKL) would look into the matter. One of the solutions was to have multi-level parking facilities.

He added that the federal territories ministry and DBKL had allocated RM8.4 million for the Seri Perak PPR.

The money will be used to replace 14 units of lift at the seven blocks, repair electrical wiring at a cost of RM1.8 million, and upgrade the community hall at a cost RM400,000.

Another RM1 million has also been kept aside to upgrade the football field and other facilities in and around the seven blocks.

Ismail said his working visit to the Seri Perak PPR flats with federal territories minister Shahidan Kassim today was to hear complaints raised by residents on their living conditions. The major complaint, he said, was on the poor condition of the lifts.

Meanwhile, asked about making vaccines mandatory, Ismail said the Cabinet was still discussing the matter.

However, he urged everyone to be fully vaccinated to enjoy the benefits that come with it as they will be allowed to cross borders, eat at restaurants, pray at mosques and go for umrah, among other things.

Ismail said although the government did not intend to act against those who choose not to be vaccinated, action would be taken if they spread fake news on vaccination.

“However, the government will take action against civil servants who refuse to be vaccinated against Covid-19,” he added. - FMT
