SOPs for Malacca state polls to be finalised tomorrow

The standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the upcoming Malacca state election will be finalised tomorrow, said Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

The Election Commission (EC) will be presenting their proposed SOPs to the Pandemic Management Strategic Committee (JSPP) tomorrow, he said.

“The Health Ministry will give our review (of the proposed SOPs) in the same meeting tomorrow… tomorrow the SOPs will be finalised,” Khairy said during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

When asked how the ministry intends to prevent a repeat of what happened in last year's Sabah elections, he said they will keep the prior experience in mind.

“Our review towards the SOPs that will be suggested by the EC will take into account what happened in Sabah.

“What we will do is to ensure what happened in Sabah that time will not happen again,” he said.

After the Sabah state election last September, the Covid-19 situation in the country worsened drastically.

Khairy pointed out there was no Covid-19 vaccination when the Sabah election took place last year.

At the same time, he also acknowledged the Delta variant was not widespread in the country during the Sabah election.

“So we have taken into account everything before we give our review (of the SOPs suggested by the EC),” he said.

The Malacca state election was triggered after an unsuccessful coup by four assemblypersons who withdrew their support for then chief minister Sulaiman Ali.

The four are former chief minister Idris Haron (Sungai Udang), Nor Azman Hassan (Pantai Kundor), Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas) and Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Pengkalan Batu).

Nomination day is set for Nov 8, while polling day is on Nov 20. - Mkini
