PETALING JAYA: Umno is prepared to welcome members who defected to Bersatu back into its fold, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said, listing three reasons why defectors had left in the first place.
Zahid said Umno would only accept those who were sincere about returning, with applicants to be vetted thoroughly, including assessing if they were a “liability or asset” to the party.
“Like you, I have never forgotten those who left Umno for Bersatu and joined forces with Pakatan Harapan (PH) to topple our party and leaders,” he said in a Facebook post tonight, adding that several Bersatu members and leaders have been inquiring about returning to the party.
“So Umno members need not worry.”
He went on to say that some members and leaders had defected to Bersatu because they were naive and were duped by the propaganda and accusations levelled against Umno and its leaders.
Secondly, in some cases, those who jumped ship did so out of fear they would be persecuted by the PH government after Umno lost in the last general election (GE14).
And finally, some defected as they wanted a comfortable life.
“Which is why Umno will be cautious in handling the applications by some Bersatu leaders to return, even though we may be seen to be lenient.” - FMT
