BN can return to progressive path now, minus PAS, says Umno man

Muafakat Nasional, the political pact forged in September 2019 between Umno and PAS, now only exists ‘in name’, says Khaled Nordin.

PETALING JAYA: The decision by PAS to contest under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) banner in the Melaka state election, paves the way for Barisan Nasional (PN) to return to a “moderate, multicultural and progressive” path, an Umno leader said today.

Khaled Nordin said BN was no longer shackled by anyone and was free to map out its course.

“Umno realises that the path to victory requires the support of all races and not just the Malays.

“Joining forces with Malay parties is not the only way to take control of the government,” he said in a Facebook post.

The Umno vice-president said that in a “disruptive” political scene, a victory would depend on good policies, dynamic leadership and sustainable economic policies.

The number of votes garnered by Umno, PAS and Bersatu should not serve as an indicator of who won the polls, he said.

“Malaysian politics isn’t that simple. It is complicated. BN is Umno’s best bet for Malaysia.”

Last week, PAS said it would contest under the PN banner in the Nov 20 polls on the grounds that it was the most effective strategy to win the election.

The Islamist party, however, said their decision to stick with PN for Melaka did not mean it would do the same in the next general election (GE15).

Khaled also said Muafakat Nasional, the political pact forged in 2019 between Umno and PAS, now only existed “in name” with PAS preferring to chart its own course under the PN coalition in partnership with Bersatu.

“All the bluster about Muslim unity was just sweet talk. The fact is, in politics, various interests take precedence.” - FMT
