Covid-19 (Nov 9): 5,403 cases, more cases than recoveries

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 5,403 new Covid-19 cases today, bringing the cumulative infections to 2,516,255.

The fresh infections are more than the number of Covid-19 patients who recovered, which totalled 5,311.

This is expected to contribute to a rise in the number of active cases and increase strain on the healthcare system.

  • Patients in ICU: 545
  • Intubated: 270

As of today, the number of Covid-19 patients (including suspected ones) in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 2.5 percent lower compared to a week ago.

Those who require intubation have also declined by 9.7 percent from a week ago.

Beginning Oct 9, the Health Ministry will only publish today's breakdown of new cases by states after midnight on its CovidNow portal, as well as the number of deaths and active cases.

The breakdown by states for yesterday (Nov 7), where 4,343 new cases were reported, is as follow:

Kelantan (820)
Selangor (809)
Sarawak (385)
Sabah (364)
Kedah (325)
Johor (302)
Pahang (273)
Pulau Pinang (256)
Terengganu (210)
Perak (208)
Negeri Sembilan (191)
Kuala Lumpur (174)
Melaka (168)
Putrajaya (28)
Perlis (25)
Labuan (5)

The R-number for Covid-19 in Malaysia yesterday was 0.94. A number below 1.00 indicites that the outbreak is still in decline.

However, there are several states and territories where the number is at or above the threshold, namely Putrajaya (1.06), Negeri Sembilan (1.00), Kuala Lumpur (1.00), and Selangor (1.00).

A number above 1.00 indicates an outbreak that is accelerating its growth, whereas at 1.00, the outbreak is neither growing nor shrinking in size.

Clusters

To date, 307 Covid-19 clusters are still active, including five new clusters reported today.

The ongoing clusters have fallen by 24.0 percent from the 404 active clusters a week ago.

The five new clusters today comprised four workplace clusters (80.0 percent) and one higher education cluster (20.0 percent).
