Ex-Bersatu man to join PH component, but keeps mum on which party

Noor Effandi Ahmad (right) believes Ashraff Mukhlis Minghat (left) will be successful in defending his former seat, Telok Mas, for Pakatan Harapan.

MELAKA TENGAH: Former Bersatu man Noor Effandi Ahmad is keen on joining a Pakatan Harapan (PH) component, but will not reveal which party until after the Melaka state election is over.

Putting his weight behind the PH candidate in his former seat, Telok Mas, Effandi said he does not want to take the limelight away from PH’s Ashraff Mukhlis Minghat.

“It’s election season now, I don’t want to disturb the campaigning and ask for a membership form. We’re busy printing flyers for Ashraff, not membership forms.

“Officially, I’m not in PH, but my soul and my efforts are with PH. Whether it’s PKR, DAP or Amanah, I already have a party in my heart but I won’t say it now. Wait until this Sunday,” he added.

Effandi was among the four assemblymen who withdrew their support for the previous Barisan Nasional-led (BN) state government, along with Idris Haron, Nor Azman Hassan and Norhizam Hassan Baktee.

Effandi was sacked from Bersatu for his action.

He is the only one of the four who is not contesting in the state election. Idris and Nor Azman were fielded as PH candidates for the state polls, while Norhizam is running as an independent.

He expected Ashraff, who is from Amanah, to successfully defend the Telok Mas seat for PH, saying his constituents’ support for the coalition had not waned even after the Sheraton Move last year.

He also believed the clash between BN and Perikatan Nasional (PN) for the seat would work in PH’s favour.

“Wherever I went (when still the assemblyman), the majority of Telok Mas people expressed disappointment with the change of state government.

“They liked me, but they were disappointed with what I did. That’s why I’m confident that PH never lost support.

“There are many whom I met who didn’t vote for PH in 2018, but voted for BN or PAS. Now, they say they will vote for whom I support, though I’m not contesting. So I’m confident that many who voted for me will vote for Ashraff.”

He reiterated that he had made a mistake in following his former party in defecting from the PH state government.

Ashraff is in a four-cornered contest with Melaka PN chief Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen, Umno’s Abd Razak Rahman and independent candidate Ariff Adly for the Telok Mas seat. - FMT
