Sarawak DAP: No collab with PSB due to ‘suspicious’ funders

Sarawak DAP does not see itself working with fellow opposition party Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) in the upcoming state election.

This is due to the latter’s supposed “suspicious” funders and perceived similarities with incumbents Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

In a broadcasted press conference today, Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen even branded PSB an “offshoot” of GPS.

“Their operations, their ideology, and their modus operandi is more or less very similar to GPS. It (PSB) is more or less an offshoot of GPS.

“Because of that, I think it becomes a bit hard (and) difficult for us to come to cooperation with PSB. Of course, politics sometimes make the impossible, possible.

“But as it is now, it is quite impossible because of the coloured (sic) and very suspicious financial backers. In fact, their financial backers basically are the same financial backers of GPS... during BN’s time,” he said.

Members of the media had asked Chong if DAP will collaborate with PSB in the state election.

“We may have to take on both GPS and PSB,” he added.

GPS has governed Sarawak since 2018 with a supermajority of 69 seats in the 82-seat assembly.

The opposition - comprising DAP and PSB - had a total of 11 seats.

The Sarawak legislative assembly's term expired on June 7, 2021. However, in effect at the time was a state of emergency that postponed the automatic dissolution of the state assembly until Feb 2, 2022.

Earlier this week, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong assented to lifting the localised emergency in Sarawak on Nov 3.

The state legislative assembly was also dissolved on Nov 3.

The long-delayed Sarawak election must now be held within 60 days from that date.

The Election Commission has yet to announce definite dates for the state election. - Mkini
