The Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) has welcomed the government’s recent commitment to table a policy paper in the cabinet this year to criminalise stalking.
While it commended the government’s effort, the group reminded there are gaps in existing laws that made stalking survivors vulnerable and urged the government to speed up the criminalisation.
“Until the law is amended, stalking survivors will continue to be left without adequate protection.
“We thus urge the government to follow through on this commitment to make stalking an offence without further delay.
“We also call on MPs to continue providing oversight on this effort,” WAO said in a brief statement today.
It added that the group looks forward to continuing working with the government and policymakers to make the criminalisation of stalking a reality.
Last week, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister Department (Parliament and Law) Mas Ermieyati Samsudin announced that a policy paper and legal amendments to criminalise stalking are expected to be presented to the cabinet in December.
The deputy minister added that a bill will be tabled in Parliament following the cabinet’s approval.
She made the announcement after meeting with various government agencies and stakeholders, including WAO and stalking survivors to discuss the matter in Parliament last week. - Mkini
