BN to sit out of Sarawak polls, backs GPS

SARAWAK POLLS | BN has confirmed that it will not participate in the Sarawak polls and will instead back its former coalition partner GPS.

GPS, comprising PBB, PRS, PDP and SUPP, were formerly part of BN but broke away to form their own coalition after the 2018 general election.

BN deputy chairperson Mohamad Hasan, who is also the Umno deputy president, led a delegation to Sarawak today to meet with incumbent Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg, who is also the GPS chairperson.

"For the first time, BN will not be contesting or fielding candidates under the BN logo in this Sarawak election.

"The parties in GPS are long-time friends off BN. We are here to show our undivided support to GPS and I am confident that GPS will win a two-thirds majority," Mohamad told a press conference in Kuching.

The BN delegation comprised the coalition's secretary-general Zambry Abdul Kadir, Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan, as well as Umno supreme council members Shamsul Anuar Nasarah and Shabery Chik.

Meanwhile, Mohamad was quoted by The Star as saying that BN won't be campaigning for GPS but is prepared to help if needed.

"They have been running many elections and GPS' machinery is well known for its efficiency.

"If they want our help, we are always ready to lend a hand, but for now we will not help their campaign," he was quoted as saying.

Mohamad said he hoped Sarawakians will back GPS for a stable and prosperous future.
