PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has ordered Sekolah Seri Puteri in Cyberjaya to close temporarily as more Covid-19 cases were detected involving teachers, students, and staff.
A total of 143 infections have been detected, which includes 114 students, 19 teachers, and 10 staff, with an infection rate of 14.7%, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.
He said the closure of the school was done in accordance with Section 18 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.
In a statement he said, “apart from screening activities and isolation of positive cases and close contacts, the school has been ordered to temporarily close for the purposes of cleaning and disinfection.”
“A briefing and information session was held for the parents and teachers’ association. Continuous monitoring will be carried out to ensure that this cluster is under control,” he added.
Noor Hisham said the school cluster, known as the Persiaran Tasik cluster, was announced on Nov 29 when eight positive cases were confirmed.
“Following the detection of these cases, the Sepang district health office conducted a screening of 973 students from Nov 26 to Dec 3, and found another 135 positive Covid-19 cases,” he said.
Of the 143 positive cases, 106 were Category 1 (no symptoms), with 35 cases classified as Category 2A and two cases, one teacher and one student respectively, in Category 2B (symptomatic but considered as low-risk).
He said all the positive cases, including a teacher, were in stable condition and were placed at the Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centre at Taman Ekspo Pertanian Serdang (MAEPS) for further treatment and monitoring.
Meanwhile, Noor Hisham said the ministry also detected 700 close contacts, including 603 students, 59 teachers and 38 staff.
“The close contacts among students have been placed at the quarantine station at the Aminuddin Baki Institute and the Malaysian Islamic Training Institute while close contacts among teachers and staff are being quarantined at home,” he said. - FMT
