KUCHING: Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen has fired the first salvo against his Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) rival in Padungan, Wee Hong Seng, ahead of their highly anticipated battle in the coming state elections.
At a press conference, Chong, the Sarawak Pakatan Harapan chief, criticised Wee, the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor, over flags that have been put up in the area.
Chong said MBKS had barred political parties from putting up flags before nomination day.
“Today is the eve of nomination day and, according to MBKS, it is illegal to put up party flags.
“See what has happened, half of this roundabout in Padungan is covered by GPS flags.
“I don’t know why MBKS has not taken action. Is the mayor of MBKS above the law?
“A week ago, you said no political party can put up flags before nomination day, but now you are putting up flags.”
Wee, who was named as a GPS candidate, has described the battle for Padungan as a “David versus Goliath” match, with him considered the underdog.
Padungan is a DAP stronghold, although the incumbent, Wong King Wei, has since left the party and is not seeking re-election. - FMT
