PETALING JAYA: It’s hypocritical of former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin to say that having a dominant party running the country, like Barisan Nasional once did, had caused systemic rot in the country, an Umno Supreme Council member said.
Puad Zarkashi was responding to the claim by the Perikatan Nasional chairman at Gerakan’s annual general meeting yesterday that the dominance enjoyed by BN had led to abuses of power and corruption in the absence of robust checks and balances.
In a statement, Puad said the comments were contradictory as Bersatu was attempting to emulate Umno, which is the lead party in BN.
He said it appeared to be hypocritical as Bersatu itself had a great desire to be the dominant party.
“Their plan is to bury Umno and replace it with Bersatu as the successor.
“That is why Bersatu imitates the colour red (used by Umno) and uses the word ‘United’ like Umno (an acronym for United Malays National Organisation).
“Bersatu also uses blue as Perikatan Nasional’s colour just like BN.”
Puad said Muhyiddin’s comments stemmed from his disappointment in failing to lead Bersatu to usurp Umno as the dominant party in the country.
He said corruption and abuses of power can happen in any number of contexts, not just because of a dominant party in the government.
He also reminded Muhyiddin that he had suspended Parliament and declared an emergency when he was prime minister. - FMT
