SARAWAK POLLS | Sarawak PKR has slashed the number of seats it will contest in the forthcoming state election by almost half.
Instead of 47 seats, it will now field candidates in 27 areas with a possibility of “one or two more”.
Unlike in the previous 2016 Sarawak election, it will not clash with fellow Pakatan Harapan component party DAP.
This afternoon, PKR unveiled its candidate list for the 27 seats.
Sarawak PKR election director Dominique Ng explained that they ultimately decided to focus their resources on “winnable” seats.
“We would rather focus on the more winnable seats than to put candidates in areas where we have absolutely no chance...
“We decided to reduce our seats partly because we need to be realistic in our expectations. So that is why there is this rather drastic reduction,” he said at a press conference at the party’s new state headquarters in Gala City, Kuching, this afternoon.
Ng hinted at the possibility of “one or two more” candidates that will be announced just before nomination day on Dec 6.
“But certainly, no three-cornered fights with the DAP,” he assured.
Below is the candidate list as announced by Sarawak PKR today:
N01 Opar - Meneng Anak Biris

'Harapan spirit' prevails
PKR and DAP initially appeared to be headed towards a clash when they crossed swords over a previous Harapan seat negotiation deal.
The former had gone as far as to deem the deal “null and void”.
Today, Sarawak PKR secretary Joshua Jabeng, who is the Kakus candidate, indicated that such grouses were solved.
“We are in a pact. In the spirit of Pakatan Harapan, we will not clash. That is the basic principle,” Joshua said.
Based on the list above, PKR will be defending Batu Lintang and Ba’Kelalan.
It won these seats in the previous state election but representatives See Chee How and Baru Bian have since defected to Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) - an opposition party not aligned with Harapan.
This time around, PKR is fielding Ng’s daughter Cherishe Ng in Batu Lintang and Lun Bawang former banker Martin Samuel Labo in Ba’ Kelalan.
PKR will not be defending Krian, which it won in 2016 but representative Ali Biju has since defected to Bersatu.
