PETALING JAYA: The health ministry will be offering up to RM37,000 a month for high-ranking medical specialists in an attempt to attract and retain them in the public health system, according to deputy health minister Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali.
He told the Dewan Rakyat yesterday that medical specialists in Grade UD53, UD54, UD55 and UD56 positions can also earn up to RM21,000 a month in wages and allowances,
The ministry is also considering promoting medical specialists to Grade UD54 after nine years of service.
“We also have added on methods of promoting and introduced Grade UD56 in January 2017 as well as the add-on emolument of as much as RM2,000,” he said.
On retirement benefits for specialists in the public system, Noor Azmi said they would be offered both monetary and non-monetary benefits.
In September, health minister Khairy Jamaluddin said Malaysia was in need of 28,000 medical specialists by 2030.
He said the shortage in medical specialists had led to longer waiting times for those needing specialist treatment.
Khairy said a special committee was formed on Aug 20 to look into ways to extend benefits for contract medical and healthcare workers. - FMT
