Dilapidated bridge in Sandakan sparks concerns over students' safety

Images of students having to cross a dilapidated suspension bridge to go to school have attracted attention on social media, with netizens expressing concern for the safety of the students.

The images – shared by Bernama on its social media – depicted children in school uniforms carrying their backpacks and school supplies as they crossed the part of the suspension bridge that was missing most of the wooden planks on its deck.

The students are seen carefully gripping onto the rope railings as they navigate across the broken part of the bridge.

According to Bernama, these students from SK Sibuga Besar in Sandakan, Sabah, were forced to cross the dilapidated bridge in order to get to school on the first day of the school's reopening.

The images shared by Bernama have since gone viral on social media platforms, with many questioning how something like this can still happen in Malaysia.

In a tweet that has since been widely shared, teacher Nazira Roslee urged people to stop romanticising such an incident.

"These kids risk their lives to get basic human rights. You should've centred the discussion on why after so many years since the formation of Malaysia, this is still happening?" she said, in reply to the images shared by Bernama.

Many have also accused the elected representatives in the area of not performing their duties.

The images were also shared on a teachers' group on Facebook, where many urged local authorities to act quickly to fix the bridge for the students' safety.

Schools nationwide have reopened starting Jan 9 and 10.

Malaysiakini had reached out to the elected representatives for the area, Bersatu Libaran MP Zakaria Mohd Edris and Umno Sungai Manila assemblyperson Mokran Ingkat, to respond to this matter.

They said they had taken immediate action to address the matter, with Mokran saying he is also in the midst of applying for government allocation to repair the suspension bridge fully.
