PETALING JAYA: Logging and environmental destruction is a greater sin than not covering up oneself, said former law minister Zaid Ibrahim.
Commenting on a sign he saw in Tumpat, Kelantan, which reminded young people to dress modestly, Zaid said he was dismayed to note the penalty of RM1,000 fine or six-month jail term, or both.
“This is not the way we teach the rakyat to dress appropriately, this is how we make life difficult for the raykat,” he said on Facebook.
“Wearing such clothing aren’t the only sins. If we destroy the state with excessive logging and ruin the environment… that’s a bigger sin.
“There’s no need to send our youth to jail because (of) tight clothing.”
This comes as the Kelantan government denied claims that logging activities contributed to the recent floods in the state.
Stressing that the state would not stop its logging activities, deputy menteri besar Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah was quoted last Thursday as saying that logging was conducted according to stipulated regulations. - FMT
