Najib Abdul Razak was given a preview ride on the new Putrajaya MRT Line one day ahead of the official launch because he asked.
MRT Corp CEO Mohd Zarif Hashim said an invitation was extended to Najib after the former prime minister voiced his eagerness through social media.
"As you know, he actually tweeted that 'I would love to be on the train'. Because of the tweet, we replied," said Zarif.
He refused to comment on criticisms that Najib was given special treatment.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who officially launched the Putrajaya MRT Line today, said MRT Corp had a right to do so.
"I don't want to comment on MRT Corp's motivations... Today, I launched it and yesterday MRT Corp invited (Najib). That is their right," the prime minister said.
On May 21, Najib said he "could not wait" to try out MRT2 on his Facebook page. It was not a tweet.
Yesterday, Najib uploaded photographs and video clips of him and several family members going on a ride on MRT2.
All the MRT projects were initiated when Najib was prime minister.
Currently, only Phase 1 of the Putrajaya MRT Line is operational and will connect Sungai Buloh in Selangor to Batu in Kuala Lumpur.
Eventually, Phase 2 will traverse through TRX - another Najib-era project named after his father and second prime minister Abdul Razak. - Mkini
