DAP founding member Chen Man Hin dies

DAP founding member Dr Chen Man Hin passed away at his home in Seremban this morning.

The 97-year-old was the DAP chairperson from 1966 to 1999, following which he was appointed as the party's first lifetime adviser.

He is survived by five children and his wife.

Chen was born in Guangdong province, China in 1924 and grew up in Seremban.

He graduated from Universiti Malaya's King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore in 1952. Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad graduated from the same institution a year later.

After serving in public hospitals, Chen set up his own practice in Seremban known as Chen Dispensary which is still in operation.

He first entered Parliament in 1969 as the representative for Seremban Timor and would go on to represent the Seremban constituency four more times.

Chen's most memorable electoral outing was in 1982 when he was challenged by then MCA president Lee San Choon for the Seremban seat.

It was a clash between two party heads which saw Lee unseating Chen with a majority of just 845 votes.

However, Chen wrested back the seat with a comfortable margin in a by-election the next year. - Mkini
