Court rejects Rosmah’s fresh bid to remove Sri Ram from corruption case

The High Court dismissed Rosmah Mansor’s (centre) application for leave to commence judicial review to challenge Gopal Sri Ram’s appointment.

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has turned down a fresh bid by Rosmah Mansor to disqualify Gopal Sri Ram from leading the prosecution in her corruption trial linked to a RM1.25 billion solar project in Sarawak.

Judge Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid dismissed Rosmah’s application for leave to commence judicial review to challenge Sri Ram’s appointment.

The court’s decision was conveyed to her lawyers as well as to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) via email today.

On June 24, Rosmah filed an application to initiate judicial review proceedings to challenge Sri Ram’s appointment.

She claimed that his appointment as an ad hoc prosecutor, made under Section 376(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code, did not extend to her corruption trial.

Instead, she alleged that the former Federal Court judge was only appointed by then attorney-general Tommy Thomas to handle the prosecution in 1MDB-related cases.

Rosmah, the wife of jailed former prime minister Najib Razak, sought a court order to set aside Sri Ram’s appointment as well as to suspend proceedings in her corruption case.

Rosmah is facing three counts of corruption for allegedly soliciting RM187.5 million from former Jepak Holdings Sdn Bhd managing director Saidi Abang Samsudin, through former aide Rizal Mansor, as an inducement to help the company secure a solar project for rural schools in Sarawak.

Another High Court is set to rule on Rosmah’s corruption case on Sept 1. - FMT
