KUALA LUMPUR: Pengerang member of parliament Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said has confirmed that she is still the special adviser to the Prime Minister on law and human rights.

In a Facebook post this morning, she said that up until National Day, she is still serving Putrajaya in that capacity.

This came after rumours claiming that she had resigned from the post after taking a veiled swipe at her boss, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri, during an Umno gathering last Saturday.

"I would like to confirm that as of Aug 31, 2022, I am still serving as the law and human rights adviser.

"I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a happy 65th Hari Merdeka. #KeluargaMalaysiaTeguhBersama," she wrote.

During the Umno gathering at the World Trade Centre on Saturday, which was held in solidarity with former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's imprisonment, Azalina took a jab against Ismail Sabri for maintaining the current Attorney-General.

Azalina said as per normal practice in any other country, a prime minister would appoint "his own people" to be the A-G due to the immense power held by the A-G.

"In any country, whoever becomes the prime minister will choose his own people to become the A-G.

"I've been an Umno division leader for more than 20 years. Of course, the division secretary is my own man, and so is the information chief because I appoint them," she said on Saturday.

This led to many criticisms levelled against her with Bersih 2.0 chairman Thomas Fann saying he was disappointed with Azalina's fiery 10-minute speech.

Azalina had responded to the criticism yesterday (Tuesday) and explained that when she mentioned the words "his own people", it had nothing to do with her stand on the separation of powers between the judiciary, executive and legislature, as well as the separation of A-G and public prosecutor. - NST
