Shafie, Leiking returned unopposed as Warisan’s top two

Warisan secretary-general Loretto Padua Jr says the 20 positions on the Supreme Council will be contested at the party congress next week.

KOTA KINABALU: Semporna MP Shafie Apdal has been returned unopposed as Warisan president, together with four other top party leaders including the deputy president and three vice-presidents.

Penampang MP Darell Leiking was returned unopposed as deputy president, and Sulabayan assemblyman Jaujan Sambakong, Tanjong Aru assemblyman Junz Wong and Terrence Siambun as vice-presidents.

Warisan secretary-general Loretto Padua Jr said they were the only ones nominated for the posts when nominations closed on Aug 7.

The party elections are scheduled to be held at Warisan’s annual meeting on Aug 26-27.

Loretto said 20 positions on the Supreme Council will be contested at the assembly. The party has received 50 nominations, but only 40 candidates are eligible to contest.

Other positions to be filled by appointment are those of secretary-general, treasurer-general, information chief, two vice-presidents and 11 Supreme Council members.

Shafie, who chaired a Supreme Council meeting today, said the Lahad Datu, Kota Marudu and Beaufort divisions had been suspended over problems with the divisional elections earlier this month.

The three divisions are to hold a general meeting after the party’s annual meeting where their representatives will be observers at the meeting.

The party congress is expected to be attended by 5,000 members. - FMT
