Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said there will be more transparency once a new law to regulate political contributions is in place.
“There will be no more stacks of cash in the cellars or tunnels once we have the law on political funding,” he told reporters yesterday, according to The Star.
Wan Junaidi (above) said the government is looking to table the new bill when the Dewan Rakyat convenes in October and aims to pass the bill within three weeks.
The National Centre for Governance, Integrity, and Anti-corruption (GIACC) is drafting the bill.
It is at the preliminary stage where several proposals are being considered, including one for a federal fund to be used by political parties.
Other proposals include barring government-linked companies from seeking government contracts and permits as well as making it illegal for foreign governments to make political donations.
Wan Junaidi predicted the new law can be enforced as early as December but implementation would unlikely be immediate.
He said the UK took five years to pass its political funding laws and another five years to implement them. - Mkini
