Cops probing protests at Dutch, Swedish embassies

Demonstrators at the Swedish embassy in Kuala Lumpur to protest the inaction against a far-right politician who burned the Quran in Stockholm last week.

PETALING JAYA: Dang Wangi police are investigating two gatherings held to protest the burning of the Quran in Sweden which are alleged to have breached the Peaceful Assembly Act.

The 2pm protests were held in front of the Dutch and Swedish embassies, Dang Wangi police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya said in a statement.

Some 80 protesters had gathered in front of the Dutch embassy, while an estimated 400 had rallied in front of the Swedish embassy, he said.

“The protesters we have identified will be summoned to the Dang Wangi station in the near future to facilitate the probe,” he said.

Noor Delhan said the investigation was over the failure of the organisers to inform the authorities of the planned gatherings.

He also advised the public against attending any illegal gathering, adding that “action will be taken” against them.

Earlier reports said about 1,000 people had marched to the Swedish embassy from the As-Syakirin KLCC mosque after Friday prayers to protest the Swedish government’s inaction against a far-right politician who burned the Quran during a demonstration in Stockholm last week.

The protesters were heard shouting “Protest Sweden” and “Hancur (destroy) Sweden”.

Among those taking part were leaders from PAS, Bersatu and Muslim NGOs.

Swedish far-right politician Rasmus Paludan’s burning of the Quran on Saturday sparked outrage among Muslims worldwide.

Wisma Putra summoned the charge d’affaires of the Swedish embassy in Kuala Lumpur over the matter yesterday. - FMT
