Zambry: Trip to France boost for bilateral relations

Foreign Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir is talking up bilateral relations between Malaysia and France following a recent working visit to Paris where he met his counterpart, Catherine Colonna.

He said efforts would be made to enhance bilateral cooperation between the two nations, especially in sectors of mutual benefits, such as education, defence, trade, investment and health.

Zambry also expressed Malaysia's views on regional and international issues.

“This is to enable both countries to play an important role on the multilateral platform, in ensuring that the stability and security of the region are preserved, especially in relation to the Indo-Pacific region, the South China Sea and Asean,” he said on Facebook.

In a statement on the French Foreign Ministry website, it was noted that the two ministers called for the Charter of the United Nations to be respected in the Russian war against Ukraine, particularly for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.

The ministers also expressed their deep concern about the political and humanitarian situation in Myanmar following the military coup and their commitment to a return to democracy and the rule of law in that country.

They reiterated France's support for the Asean five-point consensus to this effect.

Zambry was in Paris on June 1 and 2, where he also held an engagement session with Unesco director-general Audrey Azoulay, the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI) and the French Senate.

France was Malaysia's 21st largest trading partner globally and the third largest among European Union members last year, with a trade volume worth RM18.05 billion, an increase of 39.1 percent compared to the value recorded in 2021. - Mkini
