KUALA LUMPUR: The opposition will rally behind Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim following his claim that he was threatened by Western powers for criticising the Israeli government over the war in Gaza, says a Perikatan Nasional MP.
Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fahysal Wan Ahmad Kamal said the opposition will support Anwar in defending the country’s sovereignty, urging the government to reveal more information on such threats Anwar faced.
“I hope the government can share information (on the threats) with the opposition, especially if we are needed to play the role of ‘bad cops’ in diplomacy.
“We understand that there are times that the government cannot speak too harshly. Perhaps the opposition can do so, because we have more latitude in criticising our trade partners (Western countries) as the consequences are not as grave to us compared to those the executive,” he told a press conference in the Parliament lobby.
Yesterday, Anwar revealed that the “threats” he received over his criticism of the Israeli government following the war in Gaza were in the form of “statements” by European MPs.
He said the government will release a media statement about the matter, when asked to provide more information.
