PETALING JAYA: The federal department of town and country planning has announced guidelines for electric vehicle charging bays (EVCBs).
Apart from strata and non-strata housing, industrial and commercial areas, EVCBs can also be built in institutions; petrol stations, as well as rest and service (R&R) areas.
EVCBs may be built outside or inside buildings, as well as at the rooftop level.
However, EVCBs must be situated away from stairs or emergency exits as they may obstruct exit routes in case of emergency.
“These guidelines are for state authorities, local authorities, and all stakeholders to plan, design, and prepare EVCBs,” said the department.
The guidelines are also in line with the fire and rescue department’s guidelines for EV charging station installations that were unveiled in July.
In existing developments, the number of EVCBs depends on the number of existing parking spaces.
For new development areas, a minimum of 2% of the total parking space must be allocated to EVCBs.
In new non-housing development areas, any additional EVCBs exceeding the minimum requirement is “allowed and encouraged”. - FMT
