PETALING JAYA: Pahang Barisan Nasional chairman Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail has rubbished claims that Perikatan Nasional will be able to win over voters in the upcoming Pelangai by-election, citing the unity government’s electoral performance in Johor.
Wan Rosdy said the unity government’s victory in the by-elections for the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state seats last month was proof of its acceptance by the people.
“The results clearly showed that what they claimed before did not materialise,” he told reporters when asked if certain narratives that the opposition was pushing, including the possibility of a change in the state government, was a cause for concern.
Prior to the Johor by-elections, PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin had said its good performance in the six state elections showed that PN would win the two seats.
Pakatan Harapan retained the Simpang Jeram state seat after its candidate Nazri Abdul Rahman won with a 3,514-vote majority.
The coalition also retained the Pulai parliamentary seat after Suhaizan Kaiat beat PN’s Zulkifli Jaafar with a 18,641-vote majority.
The Pelangai by-election is being held following the death of Umno assemblyman and Pahang exco member Johari Harun in the plane crash near Bandar Elmina in Shah Alam on Aug 17.
BN’s Amizar Abu Adam will face PN’s Kasim Samat and independent candidate Haslihelmy DM Zulhasli in the state polls.
Meanwhile, Wan Rosdy said he was confident that an anti-hopping law would be tabled in the Pahang state assembly soon.
“Right now, we only have 24 representatives from the unity government in the state assembly. In order to gain a two-thirds majority, we will need 28 votes.”
The Jelai assemblyman again dismissed rumours that several BN assemblymen would join PN if the opposition won the Pelangai seat.
He described such claims as a tactic to scare people into thinking that a change of government in the state was imminent.
“Politicians should not spread stories that are untrue.”
Currently, PN holds 17 seats in the 42-member assembly, while BN has 16 and leads the state unity government with the support of the eight assemblymen from PH. - FMT
