PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) will decide early next month whether to suspend the licence issued to troubled low-cost carrier, MYAirline.

The aviation industry regulator is currently probing MYAirline’s failure to meet conditions stipulated in the air service licence, or ASL.

The airline, which suspended operations due to “severe financial challenges” on Oct 12, is expected to submit a written response to a show cause letter issued by Mavcom.

According to the show cause letter, MYAirline failed to fulfil its ASL conditions, including paying its employees.

“Upon receiving MYAirline’s written representation, Mavcom will evaluate whether the airline should continue as an ASL holder or the licence should be suspended or revoked pursuant to Section 43(1) of the Malaysian Aviation Commission Act 2015,” it said in a statement, adding that it would also probe the airline for other possible ASL breaches.

Mavcom went on to say that it had set up a task force to look into refunds for the over 125,000 passengers affected by the airline’s decision to suspend its operations.

It has also engaged with various agencies, including Bank Negara Malaysia, to ensure affected consumers are refunded.

Transport minister Loke Siew Fook had previously revealed that passengers purchased RM20 million worth of tickets until March 2024.

Mavcom isn’t the only authority probing MYAirline.

Police are also investigating its co-founder and majority shareholder Goh Hwan Hua, along with two of his family members, under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act, over his other business activities. - FMT
