'Gunrunner' couple charged over 9mm pistol possession

A couple who allegedly supplied firearms to an Israeli assassin last month were charged at the Klang Sessions Court earlier today regarding the possession of a 9mm CZ 75 pistol.

Sharifah Faraha Syed Husin, who turned 41 today, was charged under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act (FIPAA) for allegedly possessing the gun.

Her 43-year-old husband Abdul Azim Mohd Yasin, meanwhile, was charged under Section 9 of the same act for consorting with Faraha when he allegedly knew she had the pistol in her possession.

According to court documents, the couple allegedly committed the offences at about 8pm on March 29 at Kampung Bukit Belimbing, Kuala Selangor.

Both pleaded not guilty and claimed trial, according to a government official who handled the case today.

Faraha and Abdul Azim are facing jail sentences of up to 14 years and whipping under the charges.

They were also not offered bail as offences stipulated under FIPAA are unbailable.

Sessions Court judge Sharifah Hascindie Syed Omar has set June 11 for the case to be mentioned.

The prosecution was carried out by deputy public prosecutors Mohammad Fakhrurrazi Ahmad Salim and Fazeedah Faik, while Abdul Azim and Faraha were not represented.

An Israeli in KL

Earlier today, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain announced that a couple who allegedly supplied an Israeli citizen with six pistols and 200 bullets would be charged at the Klang court in Selangor.

The Israeli, who has been identified as 37-year-old Shalom Avitan, was first arrested at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur on March 27.

Authorities seized six firearms and 200 bullets from the suspect, who entered Malaysia using a French passport on March 12.

The man had claimed that he came to Malaysia to kill another Israeli citizen over a family dispute, but police did not buy his story and believed he had another motive.

Following this, police arrested the Kuala Selangor couple on March 28 whom they believed were responsible for providing the Israeli with the guns, which they suspect had been smuggled from a neighbouring country.
