NGO leader lodges report over 'edited' video, to seek legal redress

An NGO leader has filed a counter-report over edited video clips, which were taken out of context from a speech he made when handing over a memorandum on Monday (April 1) to urge the attorney-general to act against preachers who have been allegedly making hate speech against non-Islamic religions.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, Global Human Rights Federation (GHRF) president S Shashi Kumar cried foul, saying his actual speech was deliberately manipulated to depict as though he had insulted Islam, the royal institution as well as the Federal Constitution.

“I have lodged a counter-report at the Sri Muda police station on April 4 upon discovering the edited videos on Facebook and TikTok.

“My speech was edited with malicious intent to incite the Muslim community against me without any basis. It is all untrue and a sabotage.

“In my speech, I clearly stated that Islam is the official religion of Malaysia and all the top leaders are Muslims. Therefore, Islam is not under threat unlike the perception brought about by certain politicians and also Islamic preachers, who said that Islam is under threat and must be defended.

“They are deliberately creating narratives and misconceptions,” he said.

In a video of his original speech sighted by Malaysiakini, Shashi quoted preacher Muhammad Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu as saying that the latter has to defend Islam.

In response, Shashi said in his speech, “Islam does not need to be defended. The official religion is Islam. The prime minister and deputy prime minister are Muslims. The AG, army, Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the rulers are Muslims. What do you want to defend? Don’t ride on religion.”

The edited videos, Shashi said, have since been deleted.

“However, a few Malay NGOs have lodged reports based on the edited videos and alleged that I have defamed Islam.

“Because of that, I was summoned by the Putrajaya district police headquarters today to have my statement recorded.

“I told the police whatever was necessary and the rest, I will answer in court.”

‘My name tarnished’

Shashi then said he would be taking legal action against those responsible for editing and spreading the malicious videos online.

“I will definitely take them to court. I won’t be quiet and will go all out on this.

“They have tarnished my name and reputation. Many lies have been spread,” he added. - Mkini
