Socks issue: Cabinet did not discuss action against Akmal, says Fahmi

The cabinet has not discussed taking action against Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh for continuing his campaign against KK Mart, according to government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil.

He reportedly told the media yesterday that while the cabinet did discuss acting against those who defy the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s order not to prolong the controversy on the socks bearing the word Allah, they did not discuss any specific individual.

“We did not discuss him specifically. We discussed this (action) in general,” Fahmi (above) said, as quoted by Free Malaysia Today.

He said this when asked if the cabinet was considering taking action against Akmal, who had been continuing discussion on the controversy despite Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar’s order.

“I believe we need to uphold the king’s command to maintain peace and refrain from inciting the public. There will be consequences for those who go against his command,” Fahmi said.

Last week, the king called on all parties to stop taking advantage of the issue of socks bearing the word Allah, saying it should now be left to the authorities.

Sultan Ibrahim then granted an audience to KK Mart founder Chai Kee Kan on April 3, during which Chai apologised to the monarch and all Muslims over the socks scandal.

In a posting about the meeting, the king also gave a final warning to all not to incite the rakyat over the controversy.

However, Akmal seemed bent on standing his ground on the matter when asked if he would heed Sultan Ibrahim’s decree to turn down the heat.

“Did the king ask to stop the boycott?” he had told Malaysiakini. - Mkini
