TikTok, Facebook urged to monitor rise in harmful content, Fahmi says

Social media platform providers Facebook and TikTok have been urged to increase monitoring to identify coordinated inauthentic behaviour on their sites.

This follows an increase in content reports to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

“Based on MCMC statistics, as of the first three months of this year, a total of 51,638 cases have been extended to online platform providers for further action compared to the 2,904 recorded last year.

“Both platform providers were asked to increase their efforts in monitoring content holistically and proactively following this increase (of the number of cases),” Fahmi said in a statement today.

According to him, the government had also requested for monitoring of 3R (race, royalty and religion) issues to be more effective based on Malaysia’s laws and platform guidelines.

“We also urged TikTok and Meta to monitor and take immediate action on harmful content such as scams and illegal online gambling,” he added.

During the meeting at MCMC headquarters in Cyberjaya, Selangor yesterday, the government raised the issue of a minimum verification of 13 years to access social media platforms.

It also discussed the efficiency of the platforms’ algorithm in detecting harmful content.

“This is to ensure that children are not influenced by harmful content on social media.

“At the same time, we asked to review the efficiency of algorithms that drive artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities to detect 3R content, coordinated inauthentic behaviour or any harmful content,” he said.

TikTok and Meta are required to provide an improvement and strategy plan with comprehensive details as agreed at the meeting, he added. - Mkini
