PETALING JAYA: Manchester United have clinched the FA Cup after beating Manchester City 2-1 thanks to goals from youngsters Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, marking the end of their lacklustre season with silverware.
The Red Devils took the lead at the half-hour mark as winger Garnacho pounced on a mix-up between City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega and fullback Joško Gvardiol to slot into an empty goal.
Mainoo doubled United’s lead nine minutes later after Bruno Fernandes teed the midfielder up for him to finish the ball into the net, with Ortega left on the wrong foot.
City got close several times in the second half, with Erling Haaland viciously striking the ball against the crossbar and United goalkeeper André Onana making two crucial saves.
Winger Jérémy Doku pulled one back for City in the 87th minute with a shot just outside the penalty box as Onana failed to parry the ball away from goal.
But United managed to hold on to their one-goal lead and win the cup for the 13th time.
They have won the FA Cup 12 times but last secured the title in 2016.
Their win dashed Premier League winner City’s hopes of achieving the double-double, where a team wins both the league and FA Cup in back-to-back seasons. - FMT
