Umno will leave the purported addendum issue on Najib Abdul Razak’s bid for house arrest to party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
A member of the party supreme council, who declined to be named, also said the council praised Zahid’s bold move in submitting an affidavit to defend the former Umno supremo.
“We defer to the president after the court makes its decision on June 5. The supreme council puts on record its appreciation because the president was brave and willing to file an affidavit.
“That can be considered Umno being firm in defending Najib so that the latter can get a fair trial,” he told Malaysiakini after Umno’s supreme council meeting in Kuala Lumpur today.
The meeting was chaired by Zahid (above), who is also the deputy prime minister.
On April 3, Najib filed a judicial review leave application claiming that apart from being granted a partial pardon, there was also an addendum that would allow him to serve the remaining of his six-year jail term under house arrest.
Hence, the former prime minister is seeking a court order to compel the home minister, attorney-general, Pardons Board, federal government, and a few other respondents to confirm this alleged addendum in the royal pardon.
According to a copy of the judicial review bid, Najib claimed the addendum was issued by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Jan 29.
On April 17, Zahid backed Najib’s claim of a supplementary royal order with an affidavit filed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on April 9. - Mkini
