PM accused of fearing foreign media, reports lodged

Bersatu information committee member Badrul Hisham Shaharin has accused Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of being afraid to take action against the foreign media over reports claiming that discussions were held on opening a casino in Johor.

Badrul, better known as Chegubard, claimed that while the authorities are swift in acting against the local media and Malaysians, it is reluctant to do so against foreign media organisations.

"Until today, the (Bloomberg) report is still untouched.

"It seems that Anwar is afraid of the international media," he told reporters after lodging a report against the prime minister on alleged abuse of power at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

Badrul (above) accused Anwar of abusing his powers to slander him and those who were defending the nation and the Malay rulers.

Attack against ruler

Meanwhile, a pro-Perikatan Nasional influencer, known as Aidil YB Viral, filed a separate report on the Bloomberg article, Singapore Straits Times, which reported the same, and 10 journalists.

"There are no (media) reports about the government contacting Bloomberg or the Strait Times' journalists about the article.

"(When) it comes to local media or influencers, they face bans and are called for questioning, but they (the government) remain silent on the international media," he said.

Aidil also claimed that the two media reports had tarnished the reputation of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.

Describing it as a “coordinated media attack against the ruler”, he said: "We demand to know the purpose of the articles.

"This is a clear, coordinated media attack. Bloomberg first published it at 7am, followed by Straits Time at 1pm, before other media picked it up,” he added.

During the Labour Day celebrations in Putrajaya on May 1, Anwar warned that those spreading lies about the casino issue would face legal action.

Meanwhile, Aidil also criticised the government for taking action against Badrul and blogger Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, also known as Papagomo.

On May 2, Wan Muhammad was also charged under the Sedition Act over his remarks related to the king. - Mkini
