PKR to contest in Sungai Bakap by-election

PKR will field a candidate for the Sungai Bakap by-election, said Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

The decision was reached following a unity leadership meeting in Penang today.

“We will choose a candidate who represents the unity.

“The unity leadership has unanimously decided that the candidate will be from PKR,” Chow said at a press conference live-streamed on Penang DAP’s Facebook.

Party vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, who was present, said the candidate has yet to be named but five members have been shortlisted thus far.

Chow also announced the appointment of state Deputy Chief Minister I Mohamad Abdul Hamid as the election director for the coalition government.

He will be assisted by four deputies from PKR, Amanah, DAP and BN.

“With the spirit of unity and togetherness, we will try to win back the Sungai Bakap seat which the PKR candidates representing Pakatan Harapan and previously Pakatan Rakyat held for three terms (from 2008 to 2018),” Chow said.

Ex-PKR candidate ready to contest again

The Election Commission will meet on June 6 to discuss the upcoming Sungai Bakap by-election.

The by-election is being called following the death of incumbent assemblyperson Nor Zamri Latiff on May 24, after being admitted to the hospital for stomach inflammation.

During last year’s state election, Zamri, who was also the Nibong Tebal PAS division chief, defeated Penang PKR Women chief Nurhidayah Che Rose with a majority of 1,563 votes.

Nurhidayah recently expressed her readiness to contest again if given the opportunity.

She said that based on the seat distributions in the 15th general election, the Sungai Bakap seat is allocated to female candidates from the Harapan coalition. - Mkini
