Over 1,000 foreign workers halt traffic in Teluk Intan in protest of fatal accident

IPOH: Traffic at Jalan Changkat Jong in Batu 8, Teluk Intan, came to a standstill for about five hours after some 1,000 foreign workers gathered on the road following a fatal accident involving a Nepal national.

Several video clips have gone viral showing the foreign workers assembling on the road, with some sitting down, halting traffic.

Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin said the incident occurred on Friday (March 14) at about 9.35pm.

"We received a report about a fatal hit-and-run accident involving a foreign worker.

"About 1,000 foreign workers gathered on the road and stopped traffic flow," he said in a statement on Saturday (March 14).

"Policemen were mobilised to calm and control the situation, which returned to normal when all the foreigners, mainly factory workers, returned to their hostel," he added.

Comm Dr Bakri said the police also arrested 13 Nepal nationals who tried to incite a riot.

"They will be investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code.

"We will also investigate the fatal accident under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act," he said, adding that those with information about the accident are urged to contact investigating officer Insp Mohammad Syamil Abd Manan on 011-1006 5817. - Star
