Urimai slams govt hypocrisy after party registration rejection

United for the Rights of Malaysians Party (Urimai) president P Ramasamy today slammed the government’s hypocrisy after the rejection of his party's registration.

He told Malaysiakini that the Madani government is unable to work with any party that politically opposes it.

"When they (Pakatan Harapan) were in opposition, it was a different matter.

"Today in government, they are different," he said.

He said Urimai had received a letter dated March 7, which explained that Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had rejected the party's appeal to be registered as a political party.

In December, the Urimai pro tem committee applied for a judicial review over the matter after the Registrar of Societies (ROS) rejected its application in July.

Rejection not surprising

Ramasamy said that the court application must now be amended to reflect this latest rejection.

"Before that, the minister had not made any decision. So now we are going to say that the minister has rejected it," he explained.

Nevertheless, he said he is unsurprised by Saifuddin's rejection.

"Because Urimai basically has been hammering (Prime Minister) Anwar Ibrahim, hammering the Madani government.

"We are clearly on the opposition," he said.

However, he said he is disappointed as his party has asked only for its constitutional right to freedom of association.

Even that has been denied, he added.

He criticised Saifuddin's decision, saying that it had happened despite the government's stance on democracy and the rule of law.

"I don't know whether Saifuddin wants us to go underground," he joked.

In 2023, Urimai stated that the party was formed to champion the rights of ethnic Indians in the country.

It deemed other multiracial parties "a farce" that ignored the Indian community. - Mkini
