Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Nancy Shukri said Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat was just doing his job when he revealed the rising number of sex crimes in the state.
Nancy also told PAS lawmaker Wan Rohimi Wan Daud to ask the police for any data he requires before making statements.
“If you need the data, then request it from the police.
“We (the ministry) also request data from the police before issuing statements,” she told reporters, according to Free Malaysia Today.
Wan Rohimi, who is also the Melor assemblyperson, had previously accused Yusoff of attempting to cast Kelantan in a bad light when the latter spoke on the rising cases of sex crimes in the state.
On April 9, Yusoff disclosed that investigations showed many cases were consensual but involved minors, which fall under statutory rape.
He said 252 cases were reported in 2024 compared to 206 in 2023, an increase of 22.3 percent, and more worrying was that some cases involved children as young as 10.
In the state assembly recently, Wan Rohimi accused Yusoff and Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay of cherry-picking data to create a negative perception of Kelantan.
He claimed that this was due to the ongoing Ayer Kuning by-election, which will go to the polls tomorrow (April 26) in a three-cornered fight. - Mkini
