KOTA KINABALU: An exhaust fan fell inside the Sepanggar Tunnel on Monday (April 28) after being hit by a lorry, leading to a temporary closure of one side of the tunnel towards Sepanggar Port.
Deputy Chief Minister and Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said the incident, which happened at around 2pm, caused only non-structural damage.
"No one was hurt. It was non-structural damage, and the affected section has since been cleared and reopened," he said when contacted.
The Public Works Department confirmed that clean-up operations and removal of the fallen exhaust fan were completed promptly by the concession company.
"The tunnel was reopened to traffic at 4.30pm today," the department said in a statement posted on Facebook.
The department added that an immediate inspection and damage assessment were conducted before the tunnel was declared safe for public use.
The department also expressed regret for any inconvenience caused during the closure. - Star
