After official loss, Rafizi snubs PKR congress

Former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli was notably absent from the final day of the party’s national congress, following his defeat in the contest for the number two post to Nurul Izzah Anwar.

Although Rafizi yesterday confirmed his attendance amid questions raised following a heated exchange of words with Nurul Izzah, he has not been seen at the venue since 8am this morning.

Farhan Iqbal, press secretary to the economy minister, confirmed Rafizi had returned to Kuala Lumpur after attending the official opening of the PKR national congress at the Persada International Convention Centre last night.

“Rafizi returned to Kuala Lumpur this morning,” he told Malaysiakini.

In a heartfelt Facebook post to his supporters, Rafizi admitted that the loss has affected him in some ways.

Also notably absent from the 2023-2025 leadership line-up was former vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who contested as a part of Rafizi’s team.

Yesterday, Nurul Izzah was announced as the winner in the deputy president race, securing 9,803 votes in a straight fight against Rafizi’s 3,866 votes.

Rafizi had previously said he was prepared to resign from his ministerial post should he lose the contest for PKR’s number two.

A total of 32,030 delegates were eligible to vote in the party’s central leadership election for the 2025-2028 term. - FMT
