PETALING JAYA:
Umno is not greedy for more Cabinet posts even if vacancies arise following the defeat of two ministers in the PKR party elections last night, said its president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid, who is also a deputy prime minister, said Umno knows its limits and is not interested in interfering in the affairs of other parties, Berita Harian reported him as saying after opening a TVET event in Kuantan, Pahang today.

Acknowledging that the two posts are part of “PKR’s quota”, he said: “I don’t think Umno is so greedy as to request that the positions be given to Umno. We are grateful to have seven Umno ministers in the Cabinet.”

He is confident that PKR president and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will do his best to ensure the government and the Cabinet continue to function properly.

This comes after economy minister Rafizi Ramli and natural resources and environmental sustainability minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad lost in the PKR elections.

Rafizi had previously expressed his willingness to resign as a minister if he failed to defend the PKR deputy president’s position.

He received only 3,866 votes against challenger Nurul Izzah Anwar’s 9,803.

Zahid also congratulated Nurul Izzah, the winners for the four vice president’s positions, those elected to the central leadership council, as well as the new Wanita and Youth chiefs. - FMT
