KUALA LUMPUR: The decision to withdraw charges against two Penang teachers accused under the Penal Code for caning a student rests solely with the public prosecutor.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reforms) M. Kulasegaran told the Dewan Rakyat today that the charges remained in effect, adding that the matter fell under the procedural discretion of the Attorney-General's Chambers.

"As stated by the Attorney-General yesterday, the prosecution of the teachers is intended to ensure that the protection and welfare of children are always upheld," he said. - NST
