MALAYSIANS travelling to Thailand are encouraged to wear black, white, or other dark-coloured attire as a sign of respect following the passing of Queen Mother Sirikit, aged 93, the mother of King Vajiralongkorn.
Aida Oujeh, president of the Association of Halal Trade and Tourism Thailand–Southeast Asia, said the gesture would be deeply appreciated by Thais during the national mourning period.
“It would be considered thoughtful and respectful by the Thai people,” she said, adding that while not compulsory, dark attire reflects cultural sensitivity.
Thailand will fly national flags at half-mast for 30 days, with mourning attire traditionally observed for three months. Visitors paying respects at the royal palace are advised to wear formal black or white clothing with a suit jacket.
Aida noted that many Malaysians, especially from Kelantan, often cross into Southern Thailand during school holidays, NST reported.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim extended condolences to Thailand at the 47th Asean Summit, thanking Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul for attending despite the loss. — Focus Malaysia
