FORMER Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli said corporal punishment such as caning should not be seen as the ultimate solution to addressing student discipline issues.
Speaking on Episode 18 of the Yang Berhenti Menteri podcast, Rafizi said, “Caning is only one component and not a 100% solution.” He added that disciplinary issues are often rooted in deeper social problems involving family, economic pressures, and modern media influence.
While some support reinstating caning in schools, Rafizi cautioned that the real challenge lies in setting strict conditions for its implementation and managing parents’ reactions. Without broad social consent, he said, such a policy could be ineffective and spark disputes.
Citing Japan’s education model, Rafizi noted that moral development and self-discipline take precedence over academic achievement. “Students there clean their own schools. It’s about instilling responsibility and values, not just enforcing rules,” he said. — Focus Malaysia
